The 3-Card Portfolio Formula: Why One Card is Costing You Money
By Card Manager · 19 Jun 2026 · 4 min read
Many people start their credit card journey looking for the single "best" credit card. They search online for "best cashback card" or "best travel card," apply for the top result, and then proceed to use that single card for every purchase they make—from online flight bookings to physical grocery stores and roadside chai stalls.
If this is you, you are leaving thousands of rupees on the table.
Due to the recent wave of category exclusions, reward caps, and devaluations by Indian card issuers, the concept of an all-rounder credit card is effectively dead. To maximize your rewards without drowning in annual fees, you need a portfolio strategy.
Here is why a single card fails, and how to structure the ultimate 3-card combo.
The Failure of the Single Card
Let's look at what happens when you use one card for everything. Suppose you hold a great cashback card like the SBI Cashback Card (which gives 5% cashback online):
- When you buy electronics on Amazon: You get 5% cashback. Excellent.
- When you pay your monthly electricity and rent bills: You get 0% (utilities and rent are excluded from SBI Cashback rewards).
- When you pay at a local merchant via UPI QR scan: You can't use the card at all (Visa/Mastercard aren't supported on UPI QR codes).
- When you travel abroad: You pay a 3.5% + GST forex markup, completely wiping out any reward points you earn.
No single card can be best-in-class for online shopping, offline merchants, utility bills, UPI transactions, lounge access, and international spending.
The 3-Card Formula
An optimized credit card portfolio doesn't require carrying ten different cards and tracking dozens of statements. For 90% of users, the sweet spot is three cards, each serving a specific, non-overlapping role.

Card 1: The Core Rewards Card (The Workhorse)
- Goal: High reward rate (5% to 10%) on your largest discretionary spending categories (typically online shopping, dining, and utility payments).
- Network: Visa or Mastercard.
- Top Contenders:
- SBI Cashback: 5% cashback on almost all online spends, uncapped up to ₹5,000/month.
- HDFC Regalia Gold / Infinia: High point multipliers on flights, hotels, and selected brands.
- Airtel Axis Bank: 25% cashback on mobile/broadband bills, 10% on utility bills, and 10% on Swiggy/Zomato.
Card 2: The RuPay UPI Card (The Daily Scanner)
- Goal: To earn rewards on small, daily physical transactions where merchants only accept UPI scans.
- Network: RuPay (linked to BHIM, GPay, Paytm, or PhonePe).
- Top Contenders:
- Tata Neu Infinity / Plus RuPay: Earns up to 1.5% NeuCoins on UPI transactions.
- HDFC RuPay Shoppers Stop / HDFC Tata Neu: Reliable reward rates for daily QR code scans.
- Jupiter Edge / Kiwi RuPay: Gamified cashback on everyday UPI payments.
Card 3: The Travel / Zero-Forex Card (The Explorer)
- Goal: Free airport lounge access (domestic and international) and zero (or very low) markup on foreign currency spends.
- Network: Any, but usually Visa Signature/Infinite or Mastercard World.
- Top Contenders:
- Scapia Credit Card: Zero forex markup, unlimited domestic lounge access (subject to a low spend-gate of ₹20,000/month).
- AU Ixigo / IDFC First Wow: Zero forex markup, good introductory travel perks.
- Niyo Global / OneCard (Low Forex): Excellent travel companions for low-friction international spending.
Putting the Portfolio to Work
Let's look at how this 3-card strategy functions in real life:
- At the grocery store or online fashion store: You swipe or enter your Core Card for a clean 5% cashback or high points.
- At the local tea stall or auto-rickshaw: You scan the UPI QR code using your phone, paying via your linked RuPay UPI Card to earn 1% to 1.5% back on scans that would otherwise earn zero.
- On your vacation to Thailand or when buying software in USD: You pay with your Zero-Forex Card, saving the 3.5% + GST fee that your core card would have charged.
By routing each transaction to the right card, your average reward rate across your entire budget jumps from ~1.5% (on a single card) to 3.5% - 4.5%, while saving hundreds of rupees in hidden fees.
Finding Your Combo
The exact cards that fit this formula depend on your monthly spend profile. A heavy online shopper needs a different Core Card than someone who spends heavily on fuel or dining.
